I wanted to make a 4′ tall rack to make it easier to get under and pick up the heavy canoe. I had some 2″x3″s in the garage and built the rack like one large sawhorse. The little pieces on the ends to hold the canoe on are helpful guides when you’re setting it down, but not required.
The kayak is hanging from two 6′ straps I purchased at the hardware store. It turns out that the kayak is 9′ long! I may unscrew the 8′ span of wood and replace it with a 10′ piece. The canoe is narrower at that length, but I’d like to get the kayak up higher off the ground. If you’re planning on hanging a kayak under your canoe, you may want to design the side supports so that they don’t interfere with hanging the kayak. For now I’ll call it “good enough” and enjoy paddling and sailing in West Groton this summer. ~JD
